IRC Building Code Stair Requirements & Tolerances

Residential building safety begins on the staircase. Section R311.7 of the International Residential Code establishes strict dimensional boundaries.

Key IRC Dimensions

Dimension ParameterIRC RequirementRecommended Best Practice
Maximum Riser Height7.75 inches (196 mm)7.00 – 7.50 inches
Minimum Tread Depth10.00 inches (254 mm)10.50 – 11.00 inches
Minimum Clear Width36.00 inches (914 mm)36.00 – 42.00 inches
Minimum Headroom80.00 inches (6’8”)84.00 inches
Maximum Variation0.375 inches (3/8”)0.125 inches (1/8”)

The 3/8-Inch Uniformity Rule

One of the most common reasons residential staircases fail building inspection is inconsistent riser height. The IRC stipulates that the difference between the greatest and smallest riser height within any flight shall not exceed 3/8 inch (9.5 mm).
